One Day In The City

In a world gone mad,
Where nature's beauty is but a memory,
A mutant bunny roams the wastelands,
Seeking out the last of the natural flowers.

He hops and hops,
Through the scorching desert sand,
Past the twisted metal and concrete,
Searching for a glimmer of hope.

The sky is dark and polluted,
The air is thick with fumes,
But the bunny perseveres,
Determined to find the beauty he seeks.

He finds a patch of wildflowers,
Their petals bright and pure,
And the bunny revels in their scent,
Drinking in their natural allure.

But alas, the flowers wilt and die,
Victims of the poisoned land,
And the bunny is left to wander,
Hoping to find another oasis,
In this dystopian wasteland.

I see a lot of uproar about the massive cancellation of flights last weekend and especially the debacle at Southwest. There are even calls from across the political spectrum for Buttigieg to lose his job over the mess. Here’s my take...

Should Buttigieg lose his job? Yes, but because he’s generally incompetent, not because of this specific incident.

Also, there is a big government impulse to ’do something’ to prevent this from happening again - like impose fines on airlines that cancel flights or create greater government control of the airline industry. First of all, all of the regulating in the world isn’t going to prevent snow and ice storms, which was the underlying issue last weekend. All of the regulating in the world isn’t going to change Southwest’s point to point flight planning into a hub and spoke model overnight, nor will it update their IT systems.

Here’s what the government needs to do: NOTHING

Let the consumers decide what to do about Southwest. They/we will be far faster and far more ruthless than hearings and regulations will ever be. If the free market decides that last weekend was a one-off screw up and returns to Southwest - then it’s done. If they decide to avoid Southwest, especially during winter months, that’s the price Southwest pays for screwing up. That’s how a market economy works.

If your house is burning and your children are trapped, do you want someone who has failed the physical six times to be the one tasked with breaking down the door, moving the furniture, and carrying them to safety? Not me. I want a first time go.

We hear a lot about the wage gap between men and women and demands from a lot of different groups to 'do something' about it. What about the life expectancy gap between men and women? Currently women in the United States are expected to live 5% longer than men. Shouldn't Congress pass a law extending men's lives or curtailing women's lives sooner to make life expectancy more equal?

It's only fair.

In business and industry, proof of concept is required to attract investor support. It is fascinating to me that these same investors do not make similar demands of politicians who propose multi-billion dollar expenditures on ideas that have never been proven to work anywhere.

There is a lot of handwringing going on in cities about ‘gentrification’. That evil developers would be given incentives to upgrade properties whose better days were behind them decades ago. The unavoidable implication is that it’s a racist, anti-immigrant scheme to further marginalize people who have already gone through so much. Compelling narrative, right? What about the neighbors of these properties who have had to watch years of mismanagement take its toll and lower the quality of the entire neighborhood? Once thriving commercial properties now house squatters and vagrants. Refuse from all manner of illicit and criminal behavior litter the area creating a giant “Unwelcome” sign for decent people. If developers are willing to take the risk, and it is a risk, to revitalize these areas, good on them.
